A blue neon sign identifies one of the best nightclubs in New Orleans, the Blue Nile Music Club. This is a wonderful live music venue established in 2000 where well known artists such as Kirk Joseph, Kermit Ruffins, Troy Andrews and Soul Rebels Brass Band have performed. If your New Orleans apartment is not near the downtown district, it is worth the drive to see a performance or two.
Painted
and adorned inside with blue and gold, the look gives the venue a cozy yet jazzy feel. It's spacious and charming inside, with its tile floor and big storefront picture windows. The building front is Big Easy style with a wide front porch and veranda for hanging out and admiring the street scene. The bar can get rowdy at times, depending on the musicians playing that night, but overall, its a great place for New Orleans apartment-ites to party.
Open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 pm to 2 am on Thursdays and Sundays, and until 4 am on Friday and Saturday. Talented club DJ's play pounding, danceable music when a live band isn't performing, and you may just tap your feet to the beat when you're not in the dance mood. The dress is casual and smoking is allowed inside. You can pay for your drinks - beer, wine, and a full bar selection, with any major credit card.
The Selection of music here is diverse. You can find anything from famous and up-and-coming jazz, to the blues, rock and roll, and funk acts. Sara Wasserman and Irvin Mayfield played live there recently, as well as the ever entertaining Big Sam's Funky Nation. The calendar on their website, http://www.bluenilelive.com/calendar.htm, will tell you who is playing when. Most shows begin around 10 or 11 pm, but Tuesday night, being early in the week, the performances start at 9:30 pm. To give you a sampling of some of the music, here are a few of the less well-known, yet still excellent musicians: Groovesect, Apotheosis, The Revealers and Big Rock Candy Mountain. Sound enticing? Then get a friend from your New Orleans apartment and visit the Blue Nile Music Club. Found in the Faubourg Marigny/Bywater neighborhhood, the two story club also has a party room for rent for special occasions.
Blue Nile participates in the Open Ears Music Series curated by Jeff Albert, Justin Peake, and Dan Oestreicher. Its simple goal is to provide an accessible venue for interesting music. Wednesday nights the series is held upstairs at the Blue Nile.
And where do you think the name Blue Nile came from? The Blue Nile is a river in Ethiopia that is so-called because during flood times the water current is so high that it changes color to an almost black. In addition, the local Sudanese language for the word black is also used for the color blue. Blue Nile also references fine diamonds and diamond jewelry.
